- DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this agreement, "Home" institution shall mean the institution granting the student a degree, and "Host" institution shall mean the institution accepting the exchange student from the home institution. "Exchange" shall refer to an exchange of students/scholars from each institution. "Exchange students" shall mean students participating in the student exchange program implemented herein; "student exchange program" shall mean the student exchange program established herein. Semester, module or academic year shall refer to the standard academic period(s) relevant to the host institution.
- PURPOSE
The MOU will identify a framework for cooperation and partnership between Elon and GITAM, each a "Party'and collectively the "Parties". The purpose of this MOU is intended to improve, through collaboration, the scientific, educational and research level ofthe Parties and to promote and intensify the mutual understanding of the culture and educational preparation of the wvo countries. Cooperation between the Parties involves the areas of education, research and academic management.
- CONTENT OF THE COOPERATION / ITRMS OF U NDERSTANDING
The key areas to have a main focus through the MOU are:
- Teaching and learning processes and best practices that can be exchanged, which includes curriculum design, implementation, and execution.
- Scholarly areas which are of mutual interest.
- Exchange of professors, researchers, and staft consistent with applicable laws and policies of the respective Parties:
- The exchange of senior faculty and researchers may take place on a long and on shortterm basis. The purpose of exchange of faculty or researchers is to promote collaborative research, other academic developments and to further mutual understanding and friendship.
- Each institution will welcome visiting faculty. The Host institution is not obligated to provide financial support for visiting faculty but agrees to provide assistance with immigration requirements in support of academic activities and information regarding suitable accommodations. The two institutions agree in principle to the possibility of other staff exchanges as well. The details ofsuch arran8ements will be negotiated on an as needed basis.
- Exchange of students:
- The exchange of students may take place on a short-term basis (maximum of two months). The purpose of student exchange is to promote the mutual understanding of the culture, educational scenario and healthcare systems between Parties.
- A student who leaves the placement earty for any reason will not be entitled to a refund of fees paid at the home institution or any accommodation charges assessed at the host institution.
- Parties will determine the number of students, who will be able to participate in the exchange program each year. A schedule will be made at least 6 months prior to the commencement of each exchange; such schedule may be altered by mutual agreement with notice given to both parties. Exchange student participation at the host institution will be in accordance with respective governmental guidelines. Experiences for Elon students visiting GITAM may include the disciplines and areas of Science and Technology, Medical and Pharmacy, Life Sciences etc. Experiences for GITAM students visiting Elon may include the disciplines and areas of Science and Technology, Medical and Pharmacy, Life sciences etc., as per the requirement from time to time. The Parties agree that it may not be feasible to exchange an equal number of students in a given year.
- MUTUAT RESPONSIBILITIES
- SETECTION OF PARTICIPANTS
- The Home institution will screen and select student applicants for exchange. The Host institution will reserve the right to make the final decision regarding the admission of each student nominated for the exchange.
- Home institution shall ensure that each exchange student is enrolled as a full-time student in a degree-oriented course of study at their home institution (undergraduate or graduate program) and demonstrates academic proficiency, as determined by the Home institution, by a certified transcript.
- The Home institution ensures that exchange students are in good academic standing
- All students must meet the English language proficiency entry requirements of the Host institution. The Parties will share with each other any language admission requirements for each respective institution.
- Both Parties agree that the exchange student is in a learning environment and the primary purpose of this exchange is for the studenfs learnlng. lt is further understood that the student shall not at any time replace or substitute for any faculty nor shall students perform any duties normally performed by a faculty except such duties as are part of their training and are performed by the student under the direct supervision of a qualified faculty member.
- Both institutions will make no distinction among exchange students covered by this MOU based on race, religion, sex, gender, creed, age, disability, national origin, or any other factor protected by law.
- FINANCIAI. CONSIDERATIONS AND ACCOMODATIONS
- Tuition:
- Students will pay the normal and prescribed tuition and related fees at their Home institution for the period of the exchange.
- Host institution employees shall not receive compensation from the Home institution for participating in the exchange program; nor shall Home institution employees or the institution receive compensation from the Host for participating in the exchange program.
- Housing Accommodations:
The Host institution will assist the exchange student in locating suitable accommodation. The cost of accommodation, including food, is the responsibility of the exchange student.
- Transportation:
The Parties agree that the exchange student is responsible for arrangement and cost of their own international and domestic travel arrangements and associated costs (unless special arrangements are made by the home institution). Each institution will provide information to arriving students regarding booking services for airport reception and transport arrangements from the airport nearest the campus to the institution.
- lmmunizations:
Exchange students will be required to show proof of current immunizations (or signed waiver if applicable), including but not limited to and in compliance with the Host institution's specific requirements and required by applicable.
- Health insurance coverage
Each exchange student is required to show proof of health insurance coverage that includes sufficient medical coverage meetin8 the requirements of the Host institution. The cost of the insurance is the responsibility of the exchange student, unless special arrangements are made by the Home institution.
- Liability lnsurance
Exchange students hosted by each institution will be required to comply with the insurance policies and procedures for international students.
- Arrangement for Passports and Visas
Each exchange student is responsible for meeting governmental/immigration requirements for travel- The designated representative ofthe host institution will provide supportive docu mentation for the excha nge students to apply for an appropriate student exchange visa.

- GENERAl TERMS

Home institution will ensure that exchange students abide by the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, by-laws and scope of practice of the Home and Host institutions. Each Party reserves the riSht to dismiss any participating students at any time for academic or personal misconduct in violation of its established regulations. The dismissal of a student shall not abrogate the arrangement regarding other exchange students.
- GITAM students must have completed their first year of study at the home institution.
- Elon students must have completed their first year of study at the home institution.
- Exchange students will be able to attend academic courses offered by the Host institution
- Health Insurance Coverage
- Academic courses will be pre-selected by faculty at the Host institution. Designated representative at Host institution will notify Home institution representative about available courses.
- Participation in labs and patient anteractions will be in accordance with governmental agency regulations.
- EXCHANGE STUDENTS' RECORDS
Parties agree to provide letters of recommendation for exchange students prior to the final selection for participation in the exchange- lt is understood that the Parties will strive to select only individuals of the highest quality for participation in the program. Each institution reserves the right of prior approval of the individuals nominated by the other.
- RECEPTION AND ORIENTATION
Each institution will ensure that adequate arrangements are made for the reception and orientation of exchange students.
- INTETLECTUAT PROPERTY
The primary objective of research activities at Elon and GITAM is the generation of new knowledge and its expeditious dissemination for the public's benefit. Accordingly, the Parties will provide all reasonable cooperation with each other in meeting this objective.
The Parties agree that exchange students and/or scholars may collaborate in creating joint publications and presentations based on the results of any collaborative research conducted. For any such publication or presentation, the collaborators shall be acknowledged as authors in an order based on individual agreements prior to the initiation of the research project.
The Parties agree that all publications, presentations and other communications created jointly by the exchange student and/or scholar from the activities conducted under the MOU need to be reviewed and approved in accordance with the policies of both Parties prior to publication or presentation.
Parties agree that dissemination of information to the public or use of any trademark, service mark, tradename, logo, or symbol that is representative of a party or its entities, whether registered or not, or use the name, title, likeness, or statement of the other party's faculty member, employee, or student, without the other party' s prior written consent.
Parties agree that under this MOU neither institution may transfer any intellectual property rights or other proprietary rights owned by the other institution.
- ANNUAT REVIEW
The Parties agree that all publications, presentations and other communications created jointly by the exchange student and/or scholar from the activities conducted under the MOU need to be reviewed and approved in accordance with the policies of both Parties prior to publication or presentation.
- PROGRAM APPROVAL
Proposals for succeeding years' exchanges will be prepared and reviewed prior to the commencement of the academic year for each institution. Each institution will exchange information about their opportunities and specific needs for the period designated, with identification of the resources that will be available to support the exchange at each institution.
- ACADEMIC RESOURCES
The Host institution will ensure that exchange students are entitled to the same rights and privileges (including library resources and student support services)as other enrolled students at the Host institution.
- ACADEMIC CREOIT
Academic course credit will be provided by the Home institution in accordance with their own policies and procedures.
- EXCHANGE STUDENTS' FAMITIES
It is not anticipated that spouses or dependents will accompany the exchange student. Should such arrangement be proposed, it is subject to approval by the Host institution with the understanding that all additional expenses incurred by accompanying spouses or dependents are the responsibility of the individual exchange student.
- TERM OF MEMORANDUM AND TERMINATION PROCESS
This MOU may be modified at any time by mutual, written consent of authorized officials from Elon University and GITAM. This MOU shall commence on the date first indicated above and shall remain in effect for a period of five (5) years. The annual term of the MOU will be renewed automatically unless one of the parties provides written notice of non-renewal intention thirty (3O) days prior to the end of the term.
lf either Pafi wishes to terminate the agreement prior to the end of the annual term, such Party must provide ninety (90) days written notice to the other party. Memorandum may be terminated at any time by either party. ln no event will early termination be effective as to any student in training participating in the experience; each student will be allowed to complete the experience at the host facility, if otherwise eligible to do so.
Both parties agree that they may supplement or modify the MOU only when both Parties mutually agree to the proposed addition, deletion, or modification of any clause, in writing.
- NOTICES.
Notices and any other communication required to be in writing shall be effective upon receipt and shall be given either in person or by e-mail or certified mail by either party.
